What it is, in one paragraph

EbookVoice is an audiobook maker for iPhone, iPad and the web. It is an independent alternative to subscription audiobook stores for the very large number of books that were never recorded as audiobooks — or were, but not in your language, or not in a voice you can bear. If you can get the text as a DRM-free ebook, EbookVoice can narrate it. It is not a store and it does not sell books; it converts the ones you have. It ships with a library of roughly 75,000 public-domain classics from Project Gutenberg so you can start without owning any ebook at all.

Who it is for

EbookVoice was built alongside blind and print-disabled readers, and the accessibility community is where it found its first users. For someone who reads with VoiceOver, an ebook that has no audiobook edition is a book they cannot comfortably read; EbookVoice makes that book listenable in minutes, with real chapter navigation and a narrator chosen for the job rather than a screen reader's default voice. How it works

1. Add a book. Upload an EPUB, Word (.docx) or DAISY file — or search the built-in public-domain library and pick a classic.
2. Confirm the language. EbookVoice detects it; you can change it. Twenty-seven languages are supported: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, Welsh, Irish, Ukrainian, Greek, Hebrew, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Czech, Hungarian and Romanian.
3. Choose a narrator. 214 natural neural voices, each previewable in its own language. Keep the suggested default if you don't want to decide — many people do.
4. Convert and listen. The book is narrated chapter by chapter on our servers. A short book takes a few minutes; a long novel can take half an hour or more, and you can close the app while it runs. The finished audiobook appears in your library.

What listening is like

• Read-along, word by word. The text is shown on screen and each word is highlighted as it is spoken — like karaoke for books.
• Listen anywhere. Playback continues with the screen locked, and you get lock-screen, Bluetooth headphone and CarPlay controls.
• Pick up where you left off. Position is saved per book and follows you between devices when you're signed in.
• Chapters and speed. Skip by chapter; play at 0.5× to 2×.
• Your books are never taken away. A finished audiobook stays in your library.

What it costs to start

You can hear the sample audiobook and convert your first book without creating an account. A free account adds a few conversion credits and one more every month — one credit converts one book, whatever its length, up to the size limit. Paid plans add more credits and lift the limits for people who convert a lot. Core listening — background play, lock-screen controls, read-along, resume — is never gated: paid features are extras, not the basics.

Why it exists

Most books never become audiobooks, and the ones that do sit inside subscription stores that decide what you can hear, on what device, for how long. EbookVoice is a small, independent project with the opposite premise: the book you own is yours to listen to. It is built to be cheap to run and simple to keep up, so it can stay free at the bottom and fair at the top.
